Are you looking for a new laptop in the great year of 2010? Well, I've written this Laptop Buying Guide 2010 specifically for you. Make sure you check out the examples I provide below so you have a good idea of what laptop is good for your specific situation.
These are the main points that you will want to keep in mind while shopping for a laptop:
- The power and speed, which are mainly determined by the laptop's processor (pay attention to the gHz clock rate, higher is better) and memory, or RAM. DDR3 is the newest kind of memory, and is slowly becoming the new standard. Duo core processor means more powerful. A good rule of thumb is to multiply the number of cores by the gHz to get a decent idea of the processor's potential. This works especially well for Intel processors.
-The graphics card, which essentially determines whether or not you can play games, or in rare cases, use some kind of engineering software. If you are the average home user, your laptop's graphics card probably doesn't really matter. If you're an avid gamer, you need to get a card with dedicated graphics, meaning it will generally have some kind of number like 256mb or 512mb in the title. Basically, this means that your graphics card has DEDICATED memory that is used specifically to render graphics.
-The keyboard layout. Who wants to use a laptop with a horrible keyboard? You're going to end up hating your computer if you can't deal with typing on it.
-The physical size and weight. What the heck are you doing with a ten pound 18 inch laptop if you're going to be traveling with it all the time? Netbooks and light weight 14 inch laptops are designed for people on the go, while larger laptops are for more stationary use.
-Aesthetics. Let's face it, people like their laptops to look cool right?
-Other hardware. This means the speakers, the trackpad, the camera, and whatever else may be installed on your possible future laptop. If you're really into multimedia, you might ask "Does this laptop have a physical play button? How loud does the laptop get?"
Now that you know what you're looking for while buying a laptop, let me give you my unprofessional yet worthy recommendations. I have provided selections from dell, asus, acer, hp, toshiba, and more. I chose to link to amazon in this laptop buying guide because I've been using them to order stuff since I was a little kid buying pokemon cards. They're great.
Here are some netbooks I picked. They are all under $400 and I would recommend them for people who just like to surf the web a little bit and check emails. This is choosing portability over power - they're tiny, but they can't handle nearly as much as full size laptops:

Here are some less powerful laptops that are practical for home users ($400-650.) They get the job done, and if you generally get what you pay for in this price range. The $600 ones will generally have some kind of feature or another that makes them noticeably better than the $500 ones, which subsequently have their advantage over the $400 ones. Pay special attention the the processors on these. Take a look at the Dell Inspiron model, I used several of them and they were great.:

These are very powerful multitasking/gaming machines equipped with powerful hardware ($800 and above.) Some of them are equipped with i7 quad core processors - meaning they are literally four times more powerful than some of the laptops in the $300-400 range. These kinds of laptops almost always come equipped with dedicated graphics cards.:
